Was a time when the Pub was a 'Haven of Tranquility' far from the cares of the working day and the evenings of domestic 'bliss'. Now, they just seem to be places where you go to get drunk/laid/punched (not necessarily in that order). This song (of Miles Wooton) just about sums it up. The tread about beers brought it to mind.

Early one Evening (Public Bar)

Early one evening just as the pubs were opening
A traveller came a walking down a quiet country street.
He saw the door ajar, entered the Public Bar
'Landlord, I would have a pint and something nice to eat.

I fancy some crusty bread and the roast beef of Olde England,
Butter from the churn and tangy home-made pickle too -

I'd be quite inclined to have a foaming pint or two.

I'll sit by your open fire and contemplate infinity
The quiet of your hostelry will creep into my heart.
And if a Regular should chance into the bar

Or maybe you'd prefer to play my brand new Fruit Machine

The traveller sat down beside the polystyrene corner nook,
The plastic leaves a-trembling to the electronic roar
Took a bite and then a chew - took a sip of 'Ready-brew'
Then gave a ghastly gurgle - and fell dead upon the floor!

'Oh dear!' said the Landlord, as he switched the coloured telly on,
'Another fatal accident the 3rd this week I fear
If they can't hold their own, why don't they stay at home?
My God, we don't half get some funny customers in here

This is a new Melodeous Lyric, to which I have written a melody - but most of the credit must go to Krash who, through a comment at the Annex, inspired the whole thing. Still at the 'rough' stage, with a bit of polishing this will be a fixture in my repertoire!

Yet another early posting - off to Turkey again on Saturday

One of my favourite songs by one of my all-time heroes. This goes down pretty good at gigs.

Recorded, as usual, on my Tascam 122L - using Kristal. Unfortunately my (bad) habit off stepping back from the mic a bit after the keychange is a bit obvious but I always sing louder in the higher register.

Cheating a little I guess - this was actually recorded (under VOM1T conditions) a while ago but, as I am still not 100% (and neither is Joe) and these lyrics of his need some serious exposure, I thought I'd submit it this month.

Joe presented these (brilliant - IMHO) lyrics to the Annex and invited members to put a tune to them - well 2 or 3 of us did and this is my humble effort. The tune probably does not do justice to the lyrics, but I tried to capture the mood of the 'story'

This Parody of Paul Simon's 'The Boxer' has been around British Folk Clubs ever since I can remember and when I did the clubs full-time, I used to invariably open with my version (Just about everybody who has sung it adds their own bits to it - mine is based on the Fred Wedlock version)- it's a fun song and goes down well with British audiences and with a bit of geographical editing I have sung it to American audiences who enjoyed it equally (unless they were Paul Simon fans!)

For the benefit of our Transatlantic hosts, I've enclosed a small glossary of (perhaps)unfamiliar terms:

The Folker:

I'm lead-fingered (insert name)and my music's seldom sold,
'Cos I massacre good music with a yard of Nippon plywood and a capo.
I do requests - choosing only those that have 3 chords, I disregard the rest
With Bert Weedon's (*1) help one day I'll be the best

Chorus:

Asking free beer and expenses I come looking for a gig, but I get no offers
Just a come on from a groupie down in (Insert place)
I do declare - I was feeling rather randy, so I had her then and there: Li-li-li-li-li-li-li Li-li-li

Chorus:

I (used to) sing the Folk Trad-it-i-on with my finger in my ear (*2)
'cos most of what I sing, I just can't bear to hear - it's a load of cobblers
Bar for bar, to the rhythym of an off-key british one-string thatched guitar: Li-li-li-li-li-li-li Li-li-li

In 'Sir Patrick Spens'(*3) I clean forgot the 97th verse, so I sang the 22nd - twice as loud and in reverse and no-one noticed
I laughed for hours, till the tears ran down my trouser legs, I though I'd wet my drawers (and when I looked I had!): Li-li-li-li

Chorus:

Well I stand on stage a hero and a martyr to my trade
and I carry the reminders of every gig I've ever played like last Tuesday, at the Irish Club in (insert place)(*4) when I fled in mortal fear
With the imprint of a Guiness bottle wrapped around my ear:Li-li-li-li

Now I've got my thing together, man - I'm really freaking out;
Smoking 'Old Holborn'(*4) resin, mainlining on draft stout and having hangups;
I get depressed, like the time I ruined my sex life when I fell and broke my wrist
And my other songs are just as bad as this!

(*1): Bert Weedon: Sort of a British Mel Bay - Well known guitar player who produced a tutor called 'Play in a day' - the aspiring 60's would be players bible.

(*2) Acapella Folk Groups often put their fingers in their ears so the can concentrate on their particular harmony line without being distracted by the people they're sing with. Many 'Traditional' unaccompanied solo singers also do this - usually regarded as affectation ' cos they're sing alone!

(*3)'Sir Patrick Spens': One of many traditional - very long - story songs (see, Harry Chapin didn't invent the genre!)

(*4): In this version I've used 'Jarrow' - North-East (UK) town that has a large Irish immigrant history (bit like Boston)

(*5): 'Old Holborn' was a very strong british hand-rolling cigarette tobacco - (this verse alludes to the theory that not all musicians rely on their music alone for the feelgood factor - ridiculous notion I know!)

I'm posting this early, as I'm now off to celebrate my (66th) birthday and might not be in a fit state tomorrow - indeed I started celebrating last night (so judge 'fit stateliness' for yourselves)

Regarding the song: Harry Chapin (though not very well known in UK) has always been an inspiration to me - I was at this last UK concert in January 1981 and I know I do not do his music justice, but it makes me feel good just trying to perform it.

Well, here goes! This is one of mine from way back (but seldom played - for reasons given elsewhere). The melody is nowhere near as good as the one that 'Melodious / Pitar' wrote for it - but I haven't learned that yet - Melodeous' (excellent) version was, however, posted on HCAF a month or so a go (by Krash). I thought is might be a good starter for my VOM1T debut.

Recorded, this morning (after celebrating the beloved's birthday until late last night), using a Tascam US122L; Simultaneous Guitar (Ibanez LE300) & Vocal using sEX1 Mic; mixed using Krystal Audio Engine and converted to MP3 format using Audacity.
